About me

pooja bhattarai

architect

Namaste, I am Pooja Bhattarai, an architect based in Kathmandu, Nepal. I have been practicing architecture for over 5 years now, during which time I have had the opportunity to work on diverse projects across different sectors. My interest in sustainable and culturally-inspired design began at a young age as I grew up observing the architecturally rich traditions of Nepal. Many of our ancestral homes incorporated ingenious solutions to stay cool in summer and retain heat during winter utilizing only natural elements. It was these experiences that instilled in me a deep appreciation for environmentally-friendly design.

I went on to study architecture at the prestigious Acme Engineering College in Kathmandu. During my time there, I focused my studies on vernacular architecture, sustainable technologies and craft-based construction methods. I also had the chance to intern with several leading architecture and design firms in Nepal, giving me hands-on experience across multiple project types.

Upon graduating, I established my own small design studio called ‘Arches Nepal’ where I worked on freelance projects. In the years since, I have led the design and execution of various commercial, residential and institutional projects across various Architecture Firms. Some highlights include a 100-room hotel in Kathmandu featuring courtyards and terraces inspired by traditional Newari designs. I also designed a solar-powered meditation hall and serenity garden for a wellness retreat center nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas.

In addition to architectural design, I am passionate about craft and making. I often collaborate directly with local artisans and help bring traditional building techniques into modern constructions. I also place strong emphasis on using natural, renewable and locally-sourced materials. This approach has allowed me to create environmentally-considerate designs that blend sustainability with cultural nuances.

Most recently I have had the chance to work remotely on the conceptual design and 3D renderings of residential units in Melbourne, Australia. The project allowed me to apply my knowledge of architecture at a much larger scale. It was an amazing learning experience designing for another culture and climate.

In all my works, my goal is to thoughtfully interconnect people with their natural surroundings through meaningful spaces. I seek to combine forward-thinking ideas with timeless designs and craft-based wisdom. It is my hope that my portfolio highlights how these approaches can mutually strengthen one another. I welcome connecting with other creative professionals and exciting new project opportunities. Please feel free to reach out – I look forward to collaborating further!
